Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes This course explores (and details) the complex nature of design starting from idea to operation, re-use or de-commissioning. By the end of this comprehensive Design Management course, participants will be able to: • Define key concepts in design management and explain the scope of the design process from inception to decommissioning • Analyse how different procurement routes impact design decisions and outcomes • Develop and present a professional Design Proposal, incorporating best practices and avoiding common pitfalls • Apply Value Engineering (VE) and Value Management (VM) principles within the design process • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Design Management framework and its integration with Project Management processes • Compare and contrast the roles of Project Manager and Design Manager, identifying key competencies required for effective design management • Apply international global standards and project management methodologies to design management scenarios • Implement effective strategies for stakeholder management, communication, risk management, and scope management within design projects • Incorporate safety-in-design principles and navigate legal considerations in design management • Utilize various design tools and conduct site assessments to inform design decisions • Develop and manage project specifications, bills of quantities, and tender documents • Apply quality, time, and financial management principles to design projects • Estimate design costs and manage project finances effectively • Draft contracts and compile comprehensive tender documentation • Navigate the complex tendering process following design completion • Manage design input during the construction phase and plan for operations, decommissioning, and potential re-use • Implement strategies for design knowledge management and project closure • Analyse current trends in design management and anticipate future developments in the field.
